Sahih al-Bukhari 6709 (Book 84, Hadith 2) #6453
Repentance for Sins

SUMMARY: A man committed a sin and the Prophet (PBUH) gave him a series of tasks to do as repentance.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet said, "What is the matter with you?" He said, "I had sexual relation with my wife (while I was fasting) in Ramadan". The Prophet said, "Have you got enough to manumit a slave?" He said, "No". The Prophet said, "Can you fast for two successive months?" The man said, "No". The Prophet said, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" The man said, "No". Then the Prophet said to him, "Sit down," and he sat down. Afterwards an 'Irq, ie, a big basket containing dates was brought to the Prophet and the Prophet said to him, "Take this and give it in charity". The man said, "To poorer people than we?" On that, the Prophet smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and then told him, "Feed your family with it".

QUICK LESSONS:

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about repentance and how it can be used to make up for sins. It tells the story of a man who committed a sin during Ramadan by having sexual relations with his wife while fasting. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked him if he had enough money to free a slave but he said no. Then the Prophet asked if he could fast two consecutive months but again he said no. Finally, the Prophet asked if he could feed sixty poor people but once again the man said no. The Prophet then told him to take an 'Irq basket full of dates and give it in charity or feed his family with it instead as an act of repentance for his sin. This hadith teaches us that even when we have done something wrong we can still make up for our mistakes through acts of kindness and charity towards others or even our own families. It also shows us that Allah is merciful and forgiving so long as we are willing to repent sincerely from our sins and try to make amends in whatever way possible.
