Sahih al-Bukhari 670 (Book 10, Hadith 64) #644
Praying on a Washed Mat

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was invited to a man's house and prayed two rak'at on a mat that was washed with water.

Narrated Anas bin Seereen: I heard Anas saying, "A man from Ansar said to the Prophet, 'I cannot pray with you (in congregation)'. He was a very fat man and he prepared a meal for the Prophet and invited him to his house. He spread out a mat for the Prophet, and washed one of its sides with water, and the Prophet prayed two rak'at on it". A man from the family of Al-Jarud ? asked, "Did the Prophet used to pray the Duha (forenoon) prayer?" Anas said, "I did not see him praying the Duha prayer except on that day".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to make sure your places of worship are clean before you begin your prayers as an act of respect towards Allah SWT . Show hospitality even if you cannot join in prayer with someone else .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ being invited to the home of an Ansari man. The man had prepared a meal for the Prophet ﷺ and spread out a mat for him to pray on. He then washed one side of the mat with water so that it would be clean enough for prayer. The Prophet ﷺ then prayed two rak'at on this mat. A man from Al-Jarud asked if the Prophet ﷺ used to pray Duha prayer and Anas said he only saw him do so once - when he prayed two rak'at on this particular mat. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to make sure our places of worship are clean and pure before we begin our prayers as it is an act of respect towards Allah SWT. It also shows us how important hospitality is in Islam as even though the Ansari man could not join in prayer with the Prophet ﷺ due to his size, he still showed his respect by inviting him into his home and providing food for him.
