Sahih al-Bukhari 6599, 6600 (Book 82, Hadith 6) #6347
The Islamic Faith of Children

SUMMARY: Every child is born with the Islamic faith, but their parents may turn them into a Jew or Christian. It is not right to mutilate animals and the same applies to children.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "No child is born but has the Islamic Faith, but its parents turn it into a Jew or a Christian. It is as you help the animals give birth. Do you find among their offspring a mutilated one before you mutilate them yourself?" The people said, "O Allah's Messenger ! What do you think about those (of them) who die young?" The Prophet said, "Allah knows what they would have done (were they to live)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your children's beliefs and allow them freedom of choice when deciding which religion they want follow.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that every child is born with an innate belief in Allah and His religion, Islam. However, it is up to their parents to decide whether they will be raised as a Muslim, Jewish or Christian. The Prophet Muhammad also compared this situation to that of animals; it would be wrong for us to mutilate them before they are even born so why should we do this with our children? He then went on to explain that Allah knows what would have happened if these young children were allowed to live longer and make their own decisions about their faith. This hadith teaches us that we should respect our children's beliefs and allow them the freedom of choice when it comes time for them to decide which religion they want follow.
