Sahih al-Bukhari 6509 (Book 81, Hadith 98) #6258
Choosing Death with Highest Companions

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was given the option to choose between life and death, and he chose death with the highest companions.

Narrated 'Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) When Allah's Messenger was in good health, he used to say, "No prophet's soul is ever captured unless he is shown his place in Paradise and given the option (to die or survive)". So when the death of the Prophet approached and his head was on my thigh, he became unconscious for a while and then he came to his senses and fixed his eyes on the ceiling and said, "O Allah (with) the highest companions". . I said' "Hence he is not going to choose us". And I came to know that it was the application of the narration which he (the Prophet) used to narrate to us. And that was the last statement of the Prophet (before his death) ie, "O Allah! With the highest companions".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for patience during difficult times so you can be rewarded by God when your time comes.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the last moments of Prophet Muhammad's life. When his death was near and his head was on 'Aisha's thigh, he became unconscious for a while before regaining consciousness. He then looked up at the ceiling and said "O Allah! With the highest companions". This statement is a reference to Qur'an 4:69 which states that those who are patient in adversity will be rewarded by Allah with high ranks in paradise. By saying this statement before his death, it shows that he chose to die with those of high rank in paradise rather than stay alive on earth. This hadith teaches us that we should strive for patience during difficult times so we can be rewarded by Allah in paradise when our time comes.
