Sahih al-Bukhari 6447 (Book 81, Hadith 36) #6196
The Value of Humility

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of being humble and not judging people based on their wealth or social status.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'id: A man passed by Allah's Messenger and the Prophet asked a man sitting beside him, "What is your opinion about this (passer-by)?" He replied, "This (passer-by) is from the noble class of people. By Allah, if he should ask for a lady's hand in marriage, he ought to be given her in marriage, and if he intercedes for somebody, his intercession will be accepted. Allah's Messenger kept quiet, and then another man passed by and Allah's Messenger asked the same man (his companion) again, "What is your opinion about this (second) one?" He said, "O Allah's Messenger ! This person is one of the poor Muslims. If he should ask a lady's hand in marriage, no-one will accept him, and if he intercedes for somebody, no one will accept his intercession, and if he talks, no-one will listen to his talk". Then Allah's Messenger said, "This (poor man) is better than such a large number of the first type (ie rich men) as to fill the earth".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of humility and not judging people based on their wealth or social status. It tells us that even if someone is poor, they can still be better than those who are wealthy in terms of character and values. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was asked by a man sitting beside him what he thought about two passersby, one from a noble class and one from a poor class. The man said that if the nobleman asked for someone's hand in marriage, he would be accepted, but if the poor man did so, no one would accept him. To this Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied that the poor man was better than many of those from the noble class who could fill up the earth with their numbers. This hadith teaches us to look beyond material possessions when assessing someone’s worth as it is ultimately our character which matters most in life.
