Sahih al-Bukhari 6395 (Book 80, Hadith 90) #6144
Gentleness in All Affairs

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught us to be gentle and calm in all affairs, even when faced with hostility.

Narrated 'Aisha: The Jews used to greet the Prophet by saying, "As-Samu 'Alaika (ie, death be upon you), so I understood what they said, and I said to them, "As-Samu 'alaikum wal-la'na (ie Death and Allah's Curse be upon you)". The Prophet said, "Be gentle and calm, O 'Aisha, as Allah likes gentleness in all affairs". I said, "O Allah's Prophet! Didn't you hear what they said?" He said, "Didn't you hear me answering them back by saying, 'Alaikum (ie, the same be upon you)?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind & gentle in all affairs; Respond politely & courteously; Remain composed & civil at all times; Do not respond to aggression or hatred with more of the same; Show love & respect for others regardless of their beliefs or actions towards you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being gentle and calm in all affairs, even when faced with hostility. It was narrated by 'Aisha who said that the Jews used to greet the Prophet (ﷺ) by saying "As-Samu 'Alaika" which means death be upon you. She then responded back with "As-Samu 'alaikum wal-la'na" which means death and Allah's curse be upon you. The Prophet then told her to be gentle and calm as Allah likes gentleness in all affairs. He also reminded her that he had answered them back by saying "Alaikum", which is a polite response meaning the same be upon you. This hadith teaches us that we should always remain kind, gentle, and courteous even when faced with hostility or aggression from others. We should not respond to aggression or hatred with more of the same but instead try our best to remain composed and civil at all times as this is what Allah loves most from us.
