Sahih al-Bukhari 61 (Book 3, Hadith 3) #61
The Date-Palm Tree of Faith

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked his companions to name a tree whose leaves do not fall and is like a Muslim. He then revealed that the tree was the date-palm tree.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Messenger said, "Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree". Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree but felt shy to answer the others then asked, "What is that tree, O Allah's Messenger ?" He replied, "It is the date-palm tree".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for steadfastness in faith; Seek knowledge and wisdom; Respect all living things; Follow teachings of Islam with sincerity and dedication.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked his companions to name a tree whose leaves do not fall and is like a Muslim. After some thought, he revealed that it was the date-palm tree. This hadith teaches us that Muslims should strive to be steadfast in their faith, just as the date palm's leaves remain on its branches no matter what season or weather it faces. It also shows us how important knowledge is; even though everyone was thinking about trees from desert areas, only Ibn 'Umar knew that it was actually referring to the date palm tree.
