Sahih al-Bukhari 6248 (Book 79, Hadith 22) #6001
The Joy of Fridays

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the joy and happiness of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Fridays due to an old woman who used to give them a meal after the Friday prayer.

Narrated Abu Hazim: Sahl said, "We used to feel happy on Fridays". I asked Sahl, "Why?" He said, "There was an old woman of our acquaintance who used to send somebody to Buda'a (Ibn Maslama said, "Buda'a was a garden of date-palms at Medina). She used to pull out the Silq (a kind of vegetable) from its roots and put it in a cooking pot, adding some powdered barley over it (and cook it). After finishing the Jumua (Friday) prayer we used to (pass by her and) greet her, whereupon she would present us with that meal, so we used to feel happy because of that. We used to have neither a midday nap, nor meals, except after the Friday prayer".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be grateful for small blessings in life; be generous towards others even if you have little yourself; practice contentment; feel happy on Fridays; greet people when you meet them; appreciate acts of kindness from others .

EXPLANATIONS:
On Fridays, the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were filled with joy. This was because there was an old woman in Medina who used to send someone to a garden full of date palms called Buda’a. She would pull out a vegetable called Silq from its roots and put it in a cooking pot with some powdered barley over it. After they finished their Jumu’ah prayer on Fridays, they would pass by her house and greet her. In return she would present them with that meal which made them feel happy and contented as they did not have any meals or naps before that except after the Friday prayer. This hadith teaches us about being grateful for small blessings in life which can bring us immense joy if we are thankful for them. It also teaches us about being generous towards others even if we have little ourselves as this act can bring immense pleasure both to those giving and receiving it.
