Eating and Drinking Until Adhan

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of eating and drinking until Ibn Um Maktum pronounces Adhan, which indicates that the day has dawned.

Narrated Salim bin 'Abdullah: My father said that Allah s Apostle said, "Bilal pronounces 'Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces Adhan". Salim added, "He was a blind man who would not pronounce the Adhan unless he was told that the day had dawned".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Salim bin 'Abdullah, who said that his father reported that Allah's Apostle said, "Bilal pronounces 'Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking until Ibn Um Maktum pronounces Adhan". The Prophet was referring to Bilal ibn Rabah, a freed slave who was known for his beautiful voice. He would call out the adhan at night to signal the start of suhur or pre-dawn meal. Ibn Um Maktum was a blind man who would not pronounce the adhan unless he was told that the day had dawned. Therefore, this hadith emphasizes on eating and drinking until Ibn Um Maktum announces adhan as it indicates that day has already started. It teaches us to be mindful of our time and make use of it in a productive way by having suhur before starting our daily activities.
