Sahih al-Bukhari 6009 (Book 78, Hadith 40) #5769
Serving Animals Brings Rewards

SUMMARY: A man was walking on a road and became thirsty. He found a well, drank from it, and then saw a dog panting and licking mud due to thirst. The man filled his shoe with water from the well and gave it to the dog, for which Allah thanked him and forgave him.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "While a man was walking on a road. he became very thirsty. Then he came across a well, got down into it, drank (of its water) and then came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. The man said to himself "This dog is suffering from the same state of thirst as I did". So he went down the well (again) and filled his shoe (with water) and held it in his mouth and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him". The people asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He said, "(Yes) There is a reward for serving any animate (living being) ".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show kindness towards animals out of compassion or mercy rather than expecting something in return or doing them out of obligation or duty only .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how serving animals can bring rewards from Allah. It tells the story of a man who was walking on a road when he became very thirsty. He found a well, drank some of its water, and then noticed that there was also an animal in need of water - a dog that was panting and licking mud due to its thirst. The man felt compassion for the animal's plight so he went back down into the well again to fill his shoe with water so he could give it to the dog. When Allah saw this act of kindness towards an animal in need, He thanked him for it by forgiving him for any wrongdoings he may have committed before this moment. This hadith teaches us that even small acts of kindness towards animals can be rewarded by Allah if we do them out of compassion or mercy rather than expecting something in return or doing them out of obligation or duty only.
