Treating Parents with Respect

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the most entitled to be treated with the best companionship is one's mother, followed by one's father.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to Allah's Messenger and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?" The Prophet said, "Your mother". The man said".Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother". The man further said, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother". The man asked for the fourth time, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your father".
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ شُبْرُمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَنْ أَحَقُّ بِحُسْنِ صَحَابَتِي قَالَ ‏"‏ أُمُّكَ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَنْ قَالَ ‏"‏ أُمُّكَ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَنْ قَالَ ‏"‏ أُمُّكَ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَنْ قَالَ ‏"‏ ثُمَّ أَبُوكَ ‏"‏‏.‏ وَقَالَ ابْنُ شُبْرُمَةَ وَيَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ مِثْلَهُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of treating our parents with respect and kindness. It was narrated by Abu Huraira that a man asked Allah’s Messenger who he should treat with the best companionship and he replied “Your mother”. He then asked again and received the same answer three times in a row before being told “Your father” as an answer for his fourth question. This hadith emphasizes how important it is to show respect to both our mothers and fathers as they are deserving of our love and kindness. We should strive to make them happy through our words and actions so that we can gain Allah’s pleasure in return.
