Sahih al-Bukhari 5917 (Book 77, Hadith 132) #5676
Following the People of the Scripture

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ used to copy the people of the Scriptures in matters that were not prohibited by Allah, but later on he changed his practice.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet used to copy the people of the Scriptures in matters in which there was no order from Allah. The people of the Scripture used to let their hair hang down while the pagans used to part their hair. So the Prophet let his hair hang down first, but later on he parted it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Carefully consider before following practices from other religions ; Adhere to Islamic teachings ; Respect religious differences between Muslims and non-Muslims
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to follow certain practices that were adopted by people from other religions. He would do this as long as it was not prohibited by Allah. However, when it came to letting his hair hang down or parting it, he initially followed what was done by people from other religions and let his hair hang down. Later on, he changed this practice and parted his hair instead. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful about following practices from other religions without making sure they are allowed in Islam first. We should also be open to changing our habits if we find out something is better for us or more appropriate according to Islamic teachings.
