Sahih al-Bukhari 5845 (Book 77, Hadith 62) #5606
Gift of Appreciation

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave a gift of a black Khamisa to Um Khalid and wished her long life. He also admired the embroidery of the Khamisa and called it beautiful.

Narrated Um Khalid bint Khalid: Some clothes were presented to Allah's Messenger as a gift and there was a black Khamisa with it. The Prophet asked (his companions), "To whom do you suggest we give this Khamisa?" The people kept quiet. Then he said, "Bring me Um Khalid," So I was brought to him and he dressed me with it with his own hands and said twice, "May you live so long that you will wear out many garments". He then started looking at the embroidery of that Khamisa and said, "O Um Khalid! This is Sana!" (Sana in Ethiopian language means beautiful) 'Is-haq, a sub-narrator, said: A woman of my family had told me that she had seen the Khamisa worn by Um Khalid.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's appreciation for Um Khalid. He gifted her with a black Khamisa and expressed his wish that she would live long enough to wear out many garments. He also admired the embroidery on the garment and called it beautiful in Ethiopian language. This hadith teaches us that we should appreciate people around us by expressing our gratitude through gifts or kind words. It also shows us how much importance was given to art in Islamic culture as even something as small as an embroidered garment was appreciated by the Prophet himself.
