Clothing for Muhrims

SUMMARY: A man asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) what kind of clothes should a Muhrim wear, and the Prophet replied that a Muhrim should not wear certain types of clothing unless they are unable to find sandals.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: A man asked, "O Allah s Apostle What kind of clothes should a Muhrim wear?" The Prophet, said, "A Muhrim should not wear a shirt, trousers a hooded cloak, or Khuffs (socks made from thick fabric or leather) unless he cannot get sandals, in which case he should cut the part (of the Khuff) that covers the ankles".
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ رَجُلاً، قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا يَلْبَسُ الْمُحْرِمُ مِنَ الثِّيَابِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ "‏ لاَ يَلْبَسُ الْمُحْرِمُ الْقَمِيصَ، وَلاَ السَّرَاوِيلَ، وَلاَ الْبُرْنُسَ، وَلاَ الْخُفَّيْنِ، إِلاَّ أَنْ لاَ يَجِدَ النَّعْلَيْنِ، فَلْيَلْبَسْ مَا هُوَ أَسْفَلُ مِنَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, a man asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about what kind of clothing is appropriate for someone who is in a state of Ihram. The Prophet replied that it is not permissible to wear certain types of clothing such as shirts, trousers, hooded cloaks or Khuffs unless one cannot find sandals. This hadith teaches us that we must be mindful and respectful when dressing ourselves in order to show our reverence towards Allah SWT. It also teaches us that if we are unable to find an alternative option then it is permissible to make do with what we have available.
