Sahih al-Bukhari 5727 (Book 76, Hadith 42) #5493
Punishment for Reverting to Disbelief

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a group of people who embraced Islam, but then reverted to disbelief and committed a crime. As punishment, they were branded with heated iron bars and their hands were cut off.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Some people from the tribes of 'Ukl and Uraina came to Allah's Messenger and embraced Islam and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! We are owners of livestock and have never been farmers," and they found the climate of Medina unsuitable for them. So Allah's Messenger ordered that they be given some camels and a shepherd, and ordered them to go out with those camels and drink their milk and urine. So they set out, but when they reached a place called Al-Harra, they reverted to disbelief after their conversion to Islam, killed the shepherd and drove away the camels. When this news reached the Prophet he sent in their pursuit (and they were caught and brought). The Prophet ordered that their eyes be branded with heated iron bars and their hands be cut off, and they were left at Al-Harra till they died in that state.

QUICK LESSONS:
Remain steadfast in faith
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us that it is important to remain steadfast in our faith and not revert back to disbelief after embracing Islam. It also teaches us that there are consequences for committing crimes, even if we have accepted the religion of Islam. In this case, the punishment was branding with heated iron bars and cutting off their hands. This shows us how serious Allah takes crime and disobedience of His laws. We should strive to be obedient Muslims so that we can avoid such punishments in this life as well as the hereafter.
