The Prophet's Branding of Sheep

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was seen branding a sheep while Anas brought his brother to him for Tahnik.

Narrated Anas: I brought a brother of mine to the Prophet to do Tahnik for him while the Prophet was in a sheep fold of his, and I saw him branding a sheep. (The sub-narrator said: I think Anas said, branding it on the ear)

QUICK LESSONS:
Take care of your livestock properly by marking them with barmilah so they can be identified if lost or stolen; Follow Sunnah practices such as tahnik which are beneficial for both physical and spiritual health .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the time when Anas ibn Malik brought his brother to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for Tahnik. Tahnik is a sunnah practice in which a date or some other sweet item is chewed and then placed on the baby’s lips after birth. During this time, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in a sheep fold and he was seen branding one of them with a Barmilah on its ear. Branding animals with Barmilah is an Islamic practice that helps identify ownership of livestock and also serves as an identification mark for animals that are lost or stolen. This hadith teaches us about two important values; firstly it shows us how important it is to take care of our livestock by marking them properly so they can be identified if they get lost or stolen; secondly it shows us how important it is to follow sunnah practices such as tahnik which are beneficial for both physical and spiritual health.
