Sahih al-Bukhari 5400 (Book 70, Hadith 28) #5174
Eating Unfamiliar Foods

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was offered a roasted mastigure, but he withdrew his hand when he found out what it was. He then clarified that it is not unlawful to eat, but since it is not found in the land of his people, he did not like eating it.

Narrated Khalid bin Al-Walid: "A roasted mastigure (a small lizard) was brought to the Prophet who stretched his hand towards it to eat it. But it was said to him, "It is a mastigure". So he withdrew his hand. Khalid asked, "Is it unlawful to eat?" the Prophet said, "No, but it is not found in the land of my people and that is why I do not like eating it". So Khalid started eating (it) while Allah's Messenger was looking at him. An-Nadr said: 'Al-Khazeerah (is prepared) from bran while 'Al-Harira' is prepared from milk.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be open minded towards trying new foods; Respect other cultures; Be mindful of one's own culture's customs and traditions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of being open to trying new foods and understanding that just because something is unfamiliar does not mean that it is prohibited or bad. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed us this by withdrawing his hand when he heard what the food was, but then clarifying that there was nothing wrong with eating it. We can learn from this hadith to be open minded and try new things even if they are unfamiliar or different from what we are used to. It also teaches us about being respectful of other cultures and their customs as well as being mindful of our own culture's customs and traditions.
