Sahih al-Bukhari 5264 (Book 68, Hadith 14) #5043
Divorce in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised Ibn 'Umar to give one or two divorces instead of three, as a woman cannot be lawfully remarried to her former husband until she has married another man and been divorced by him.

Nafi' said: When Ibn 'Umar was asked about person who had given three divorces, he said, "Would that you gave one or two divorces, for the Prophet ordered me to do so. If you give three divorces then she cannot be lawful for you until she has married another husband (and is divorced by him)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before giving divorce; Respect marriage laws in Islam; Use it only as a last resort.

EXPLANATIONS:
In Islam, divorce is allowed but it should be used as a last resort. This hadith explains the advice given by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to Ibn 'Umar when he was asked about someone who had given three divorces. The Prophet advised him to give one or two divorces instead of three because if a woman is divorced three times then she cannot be lawfully remarried to her former husband until she has married another man and been divorced by him. This shows that Muslims should think carefully before giving divorce and use it only when absolutely necessary.
