Sahih al-Bukhari 5219 (Book 67, Hadith 152) #4998
The Sin of False Pretense

SUMMARY: Falsely claiming to have been given something one has not been given is similar to wearing two garments of falsehood.

Narrated Asma: Some lady said, "O Allah's Messenger ! My husband has another wife, so it is sinful of me to claim that he has given me what he has not given me (in order to tease her)?" Allah's Messenger said, The one who pretends that he has been given what he has not been given, is just like the (false) one who wears two garments of falsehood".

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak the truth, Avoid lying and pretending
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the sin of falsely claiming to have been given something one has not actually received. Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, compares this act to wearing two garments of falsehood. This means that it is a very serious sin and should be avoided at all costs. It is important for us to remember that we should always speak the truth and never lie or pretend in order to get what we want or make ourselves look better than we are. We must also remember that Allah knows everything and will punish those who lie or pretend in order to deceive others.
