Sahih al-Bukhari 4900 (Book 65, Hadith 420) #4681
The Revelation of Surah Al-Munafiqun

SUMMARY: This hadith is about how Allah revealed a verse in the Quran to confirm Zaid's statement and vindicate him after the Prophet disbelieved his statement.

Narrated Zaid bin Arqam: While I was taking part in a Ghazwa. I heard 'Abdullah bin Ubai (bin Abi Salul) saying".Don't spend on those who are with Allah's Messenger , that they may disperse and go away from him. If we return (to Medina), surely, the more honorable will expel the meaner amongst them". I reported that (saying) to my uncle or to 'Umar who, in his turn, informed the Prophet of it. The Prophet called me and I narrated to him the whole story. Then Allah's Messenger sent for 'Abdullah bin Ubai and his companions, and they took an oath that they did not say that. So Allah's Messenger disbelieved my saying and believed his. I was distressed as I never was before. I stayed at home and my uncle said to me".You just wanted Allah's Messenger to disbelieve your statement and hate you". So Allah revealed (the Sura beginning with) 'When the hypocrites come to you'. (63:1) The Prophet then sent for me and recited it and said, "O Zaid! Allah confirmed your statement".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be truthful even if others don't believe you; Be careful of your words & deeds; Be accountable before God

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Allah revealed a verse in the Quran to confirm Zaid's statement and vindicate him after the Prophet disbelieved his statement. It was narrated by Zaid bin Arqam that he was taking part in a Ghazwa when he heard Abdullah bin Ubai saying not to spend on those who were with Allah's Messenger so they would disperse from him. He reported this to his uncle or Umar who then informed the Prophet of it. The Prophet called for Zaid and asked him about what happened and then called for Abdullah bin Ubai and his companions who took an oath that they did not say such a thing. So, Allah's Messenger disbelieved what Zaid said but later on Allah revealed the sura beginning with 'When the hypocrites come to you' (63:1) which confirmed what Zaid said. This hadith teaches us that we should always be truthful even if others don't believe us because ultimately truth will prevail as it did for Zaid when Allah revealed this verse confirming his words. We should also remember that we are accountable for our actions before God so we must be careful of our words and deeds at all times as lying can have serious consequences both in this world and hereafter.
