The Names of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the various names of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and how each name has a special meaning.

Narrated Jubair bin Mut'im: I heard Allah's Messenger saying, 'I have several names: I am Muhammad and I am Ahmad, and I am Al- Mahi with whom Allah obliterates Kufr (disbelief), and I am Al-Hashir (gatherer) at whose feet (ie behind whom) the people will be gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), and I am Al-Aqib (ie who succeeds the other prophets in bringing about good).
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ لِي أَسْمَاءً، أَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، وَأَنَا أَحْمَدُ، وَأَنَا الْمَاحِي الَّذِي يَمْحُو اللَّهُ بِيَ الْكُفْرَ، وَأَنَا الْحَاشِرُ الَّذِي يُحْشَرُ النَّاسُ عَلَى قَدَمِي، وَأَنَا الْعَاقِبُ

This hadith narrates the various names of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and their meanings. He is known as 'Muhammad', which means 'the praised one'. He is also known as 'Ahmad', which means 'the most praised one'. He is also known as Al-Mahi with whom Allah obliterates disbelief. Additionally, he is Al-Hashir at whose feet people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection. Lastly, he is Al-Aqib who succeeds other prophets in bringing about good. These names are a reminder to us that we should strive to follow in his footsteps and emulate his example in our lives.
