Sahih al-Bukhari 472 (Book 8, Hadith 120) #464
How to Offer Night Prayers

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught a man how to offer the night prayers, which is to pray two rak'at at a time and then two and then two and so on, with the last rak'a being odd.

Narrated Nafi': Ibn 'Umar said, "While the Prophet was on the pulpit, a man asked him how to offer the night prayers. He replied, 'Pray two rak'at at a time and then two and then two and so on, and if you are afraid of the dawn (the approach of the time of the Fajr prayer) pray one rak'a and that will be the witr for all the rak'at which you have offered". Ibn 'Umar said, "The last rak'at of the night prayer should be odd, for the Prophet ordered it to be so.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions given by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding prayer
EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us how to offer our night prayers. He said that we should pray two rak’ats at a time and continue this until we are afraid of the dawn approaching. At this point, we should only pray one rak’a which will be considered as our witr for all of the other rak’ats that were offered before it. It is important to note that the last prayer must be an odd number of rak’ats in order for it to be accepted by Allah SWT. This hadith teaches us about the importance of prayer in Islam as well as its specific rules and regulations that must be followed in order for it to be accepted by Allah SWT.
