Sahih al-Bukhari 4593 (Book 65, Hadith 115) #4376
Exceptions for the Disabled in Islam

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how Allah revealed a verse in the Quran to make an exception for those who are disabled or blind.

Narrated Al-Bara: When the Verse:-- "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)" (4:95) was revealed, Allah Apostle called for Zaid who wrote it. In the meantime Ibn Um Maktum came and complained of his blindness, so Allah revealed: "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame".. etc) (4:95)

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how Allah revealed a verse in the Quran to make an exception for those who are disabled or blind. The narrator, Al-Bara, was present when this verse was revealed and he witnessed it being written down by Zaid. The verse states that believers should not be equal if some of them sit at home while others fight in battles, but then it goes on to say that there is an exception made for those who are disabled by injury, blindness or lameness. This teaches us that we should not judge people based on their physical abilities and disabilities because Allah makes exceptions for them and values them just as much as anyone else. We should also strive to help those with disabilities so they can live their lives with dignity and respect.
