Turning Towards Ka'ba for Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the people were instructed to turn their faces towards the Ka'ba in Mecca while praying.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: While some people were offering morning prayer at Quba' a man came to them and said, "A Qur'anic Order has been revealed to Allah's Messenger tonight that he should face the Ka'ba at Mecca (in prayer), so you too should turn your faces towards it". At that moment their faces were towards Sham (ie Jerusalem) (and on hearing that) they turned towards the Ka'ba (at Mecca).
حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ بَيْنَمَا النَّاسُ فِي الصُّبْحِ بِقُبَاءٍ جَاءَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلَةَ قُرْآنٌ، وَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ الْكَعْبَةَ أَلاَ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوهَا‏.‏ وَكَانَ وَجْهُ النَّاسِ إِلَى الشَّأْمِ فَاسْتَدَارُوا بِوُجُوهِهِمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ‏.‏

This hadith is about how a man came to some people who were offering morning prayer at Quba and informed them that Allah's Messenger had received a Quranic Order to face the Ka’ba at Mecca when praying. Upon hearing this, they immediately turned their faces towards the Ka’ba in Mecca. This hadith teaches us that we should always follow instructions from Allah and His Messenger, as well as be obedient and respectful of religious practices. It also shows us that we should be willing to change our habits if it means following what Allah has commanded us to do. We should also strive to learn more about our religion so that we can practice it correctly and with understanding.
