Sahih al-Bukhari 4477 (Book 65, Hadith 4) #4265
The Greatest Sin in the Sight of Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) explains that the greatest sin in the sight of Allah is to set up a rival to Him, followed by killing one's son and committing illegal sexual intercourse with another's wife.

Narrated 'Abdullah: I asked the Prophet, "What is the greatest sin in the Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you". I said, "That is indeed a great sin". Then asked, "What is next?" He said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you". I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor".

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explains that the greatest sin in the sight of Allah is setting up a rival to Him, known as shirk. This means believing or worshipping something other than Allah. He then goes on to explain that following this great sin is murder; killing one’s own son for fear he will share your food with you. Lastly, he mentions committing illegal sexual intercourse with another’s wife as a major sin. These three sins are considered some of the most serious crimes according to Islamic teachings and should be avoided at all costs.

The hadith also teaches us about how important it is for us to respect our parents and not do anything which would hurt them or make them unhappy. It also reminds us about how important it is for us to stay away from any kind of immoral behavior such as adultery which can have serious consequences both in this life and hereafter if we don't repent from it soon enough.
