Sahih al-Bukhari 4339 (Book 64, Hadith 368) #4141
Prophet's Disapproval of Khalid bin Al-Walid's Actions

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) disapproved of Khalid bin Al-Walid's actions of killing and taking captives from the tribe of Jadhimah, even though they had accepted Islam.

Narrated Salim's father: The Prophet sent Khalid bin Al-Walid to the tribe of Jadhimah and Khalid invited them to Islam but they could not express themselves by saying, "Aslamna (ie we have embraced Islam)," but they started saying "Saba'na! Saba'na (ie we have come out of one religion to another)". Khalid kept on killing (some of) them and taking (some of) them as captives and gave every one of us his Captive. When there came the day then Khalid ordered that each man (ie Muslim soldier) should kill his captive, I said, "By Allah, I will not kill my captive, and none of my companions will kill his captive". When we reached the Prophet, we mentioned to him the whole story. On that, the Prophet raised both his hands and said twice, "O Allah! I am free from what Khalid has done".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully accept people into faith without using force or violence; Follow due process before taking away someone else's life/freedom; Show respect when accepting people into your faith; Do not use force for conversion; Be mindful with words used while inviting people into your faith.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrates an incident in which the Prophet Muhammad sent Khalid bin Al-Walid to invite the tribe of Jadhimah to Islam. When they accepted, instead of saying “Aslamna” meaning “we have embraced Islam”, they said “Saba'na! Saba'na” meaning “we have come out from one religion to another”. As a result, Khalid killed some and took others as captives. When this was reported to the Prophet Muhammad he raised both his hands and said twice "O Allah! I am free from what Khalid has done". This hadith teaches us that it is wrong to take away someone else's life or freedom without due process or permission even if they are not Muslim. It also shows us that we should always be respectful when accepting someone into our faith and not use force or violence as a means for conversion.
