Sahih al-Bukhari 4209 (Book 64, Hadith 249) #4023
The Flag of Khaibar

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) gave the flag of Khaibar to Ali, and it was conquered through him with Allah's help.

Narrated Salama: 'Ali remained behind the Prophet during the Ghazwa of Khaibar as he was suffering from eye trouble. He then said, "(How can) I remain behind the Prophet ," and followed him. So when he slept on the night of the conquest of Khaibar, the Prophet said, "I will give the flag tomorrow, or tomorrow the flag will be taken by a man who is loved by Allah and His Apostle , and (Khaibar) will be conquered through him, (with Allah's help)" While every one of us was hopeful to have the flag, it was said, "Here is 'Ali" and the Prophet gave him the flag and Khaibar was conquered through him (with Allah's Help).

QUICK LESSONS:
Have faith in God’s plans ; Offer moral support ; Persevere ; Be patient ; Show gratitude towards God’s blessings
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the conquest of Khaibar by the Muslims. Ali was suffering from an eye ailment and could not join in the battle. However, he still wanted to be part of it and followed the Prophet ﷺ despite his illness. On the night before they were to conquer Khaibar, the Prophet ﷺ said that a man who was loved by Allah and His Apostle would take up the flag for them. Everyone hoped that they would be chosen but when 'Ali arrived, he was given this honor instead. With Allah's help, they were able to conquer Khaibar through 'Ali's leadership with this flag. This hadith teaches us that even if we are ill or unable to do something physically, we can still contribute in other ways such as offering moral support or being part of a team effort towards achieving a goal. It also shows us how important it is for us to have faith in Allah and trust His plans for us even if things don't go our way at first glance.
