The Importance of Knowing One's Family History

SUMMARY: A man was told that his wife had suckled him as a child, and the Prophet (ﷺ) advised him to divorce her.

'Uqbah bin Al-Harith (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that he had married a daughter of Abu Ihab bin 'Aziz and a woman came to him and said she had suckled both 'Uqbah and the woman whom he had married, to which he replied: "I am not aware that you suckled me, and you did not inform me". So he ('Uqbah) rode to Messenger of Allah in Al-Madinah and put the matter before him. The Messenger of Allah said, "How can you continue (to be her husband) after what you have been told?" 'Uqbah (May Allah be pleased with him) therefore divorced her and she married another man. Al- Bukhari.

QUICK LESSONS:
Research your family history before making major decisions in life; take advice from religious leaders; be aware of familial relationships; understand Islamic laws regarding marriage and divorce; respect familial relationships even if they are not known beforehand .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of knowing one's family history before making any decisions in life. In this hadith, 'Uqbah bin Al-Harith married a woman without knowing that she had previously suckled him as a child. When he found out about this fact from another woman who informed him of it, he went to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for advice on what to do next. The Prophet ﷺ advised 'Uqbah to divorce his wife since it was not permissible for them to be married due to their close relationship through breastfeeding. This teaches us that we should always take our time and research our family history before making any major decisions in life such as marriage or business partnerships so that we can avoid any potential conflicts or issues down the line.
