Praying for Guidance in Times of Affliction

SUMMARY: This hadith encourages us to not wish for death due to any affliction, and instead pray for Allah's guidance in the matter.

Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "Let none of you wish for death on account of an affliction that befalls him. If he has no alternative, let him pray: 'Allahumma ahyine ma kanatil-hayatu khairan li, wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khairan li (O Allah! Give my life so long as the life is good for me, and take away my life if death is good for me)'". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) teaches us that we should not wish for death due to any afflictions that befall us. Instead, we should pray to Allah and ask Him for guidance on what is best. We should trust that whatever Allah has planned is the best outcome and have faith that He will provide us with a way out of our troubles. The Prophet also taught us a prayer which we can recite when faced with such situations - “Allahumma ahyine ma kanatil-hayatu khairan li, wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khairan li” which translates as “O Allah! Give my life so long as the life is good for me, and take away my life if death is good for me”. This prayer reminds us to put our trust in Allah and seek His help during times of difficulty or distress.
