Appreciating Allah's Favours

SUMMARY: Do not compare yourself to those who are superior to you, as it will lead to belittling Allah's favour.

Abu Hurairah (May allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "Look at those who are inferior to you and do not look at those who are superior to you, for this will keep you from belittling Allah's favour to you". This is the wording in Sahih Muslim. Al-Bukhari and Muslim. The narration in Al-Bukhari is: Messenger of Allah said: "When one of you looks at someone who is superior to him in property and appearance, he should look at someone who is inferior to him".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about appreciating the favours of Allah and being grateful for them. It teaches us that we should not compare ourselves with those who are superior to us in terms of wealth or appearance, as this can lead us to belittle the favours that Allah has bestowed upon us. We should instead look at those who are inferior than us and be thankful for what we have been given by Allah. This hadith also encourages humility and contentment in our lives, which is a great virtue according to Islam.
