This hadith is about the quality of people and their souls. It explains that people can be compared to gold and silver, where those who were best in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance will also be best in Islam if they have religious understanding. Furthermore, it states that souls are like recruited soldiers; they get mixed up with those similar to them in qualities, oppose those who do not share their qualities, and drift away from them.
