Sahih al-Bukhari 4012, 4013 (Book 64, Hadith 63) #3838
Prohibiting the Rental of Fields

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) forbade the renting of fields.

Narrated Az-Zuhri: Salim bin 'Abdullah told me that Rafi' bin Khadij told 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that his two paternal uncles who had fought in the battle of Badr informed him that Allah's Messenger forbade the renting of fields. I said to Salim, "Do you rent your land?" He said, "Yes, for Rafi' is mistaken".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a prohibition that was made by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding the rental of fields. It is narrated by Az-Zuhri who heard it from Salim bin Abdullah who in turn heard it from Rafi' bin Khadij who told him that his two paternal uncles informed him that Allah's Messenger ﷺ forbade the renting of fields. When Salim was asked if he rents his land, he said yes because he believes that Rafi' is mistaken. This hadith teaches us to be careful when we rent out our land and to not do so unless absolutely necessary as it has been prohibited by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. We should also be mindful when making decisions based on hearsay and always double check with reliable sources before taking any action.
