Sahih al-Bukhari 3990 (Book 64, Hadith 41) #3816
Visiting the Sick on Fridays

SUMMARY: Ibn Umar visited a sick Badr warrior on a Friday and did not take part in the Friday prayer.

Narrated Nafi: Ibn 'Umar was once told that Said bin Zaid bin 'Amr bin Nufail, one of the Badr warriors, had fallen ill on a Friday. Ibn 'Umar rode to him late in the forenoon. The time of the Friday prayer approached and Ibn 'Umar did not take part in the Friday prayer.

QUICK LESSONS:
Prioritize visiting those who are ill over other activities; offer words of comfort instead of making them feel worse by saying something insensitive or hurtful.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of visiting those who are sick, even if it means missing out on important religious obligations such as attending Jumu'ah prayer. Ibn Umar was told that one of his companions from the Battle of Badr was ill and he immediately rode to visit him despite it being late in the forenoon and close to time for Jumu'ah prayer. This shows us that we should prioritize visiting those who are ill over other activities, even if they are religious obligations. We should also be mindful of our words when speaking to someone who is ill; we should be gentle with them and offer words of comfort instead of making them feel worse by saying something insensitive or hurtful.
