Turning Away the Gaze

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised Jarir bin 'Abdullah to turn away his eyes when accidentally glancing at something he is not allowed to look at.

Jarir bin 'Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah about (the Islamic ruling on) accidental glance (ie, at a woman one is not Islamically allowed to look at) and he ordered me to turn my eyes away. Muslim.
وعن جرير رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ سألت رسول الله عن نظر الفجأة فقال‏:‏ ‏ "‏اصرف بصرك‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏
