Riyad as-Salihin 1604 (Book 17, Hadith 94) #38093
The Power of Allah Over Man

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught Abu Mas'ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) that Allah has more dominance over him than he has over his slave, and Abu Mas'ud vowed to never beat any slave in the future.

Abu Mas'ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I was beating my slave with a whip when I heard a voice behind me which said: "Abu Mas'ud! Bear in mind".. I did not recognize the voice for the intense anger I was in. Abu Mas'ud added: As he came near me, I found that he was the Messenger of Allah who was saying, "Abu Mas'ud! Bear in mind that Allah has more dominance upon you than you have upon your slave". Then I said: "I will never beat any slave in future". Another narration is: The whip dropped from my hand in awe of the Prophet . Still another narration is: I said: "He is free for the sake of Allah". He said, "If you had not done this, you would have been singed by the Fire". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for Authority , Submit to God's Will

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the power of Allah over man. It tells us that no matter how powerful we think we are, or how much control we have over our slaves or possessions, ultimately it is only God who has complete control and dominance over us all. In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching Abu Mas’ud Al-Badri a lesson about this power when he heard a voice behind him saying “Abu Mas’ud! Bear in mind”. When he turned around he found that it was the Prophet himself who was speaking to him and reminding him of this truth. Upon hearing these words from the Prophet ﷺ , Abu Mas’ud vowed never to beat any slave again out of respect for God's power and authority. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about humility and submission to God's will above all else. We must remember that no matter what our position in life may be, ultimately it is only God who holds ultimate power and authority over us all.
