Riyad as-Salihin 1208 (Book 8, Hadith 218) #37697
Instructions Given By Prophet Muhammad To Mu'adh

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the instructions given by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to Mu'adh (May Allah be pleased with him) when he was appointed as governor of Yemen. The instructions were to call people to testify 'La ilaha illallah' and that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah, and if they accept this, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five Salat during the day and night, and also made Zakat obligatory upon them.

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet appointed Mu'adh (May Allah be pleased with him) as governor of Yemen, and at the time of his departure, he instructed him thus: "First of all, call the people to testify 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no true god except Allah) and that I (Muhammad) am the Messenger of Allah, and if they accept this (declaration of Faith), then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five Salat during the day and night; and if they obey you, tell them that Allah has made the payment of Zakat obligatory upon them. It should be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Call people to testify 'La ilaha illallah', Perform five Salats during day & night & pay Zakat if able

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the instructions given by Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) to Mu’adh ibn Jabal when he was appointed as governor of Yemen. The first instruction was for him to call people to testify ‘La ilaha illallah’ which means there is no true god except Allah, and that Prophet Muhammad is His messenger. If they accepted this declaration of faith then he should tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five Salats or prayers during the day and night; these are Fajr prayer in early morning, Dhuhr prayer at noon time, Asr prayer in late afternoon, Maghrib prayer at sunset time and Isha prayer at night time. He should also inform people that payment of Zakat or charity is obligatory on those who can afford it; it should be collected from their rich people and distributed among their poor ones. These teachings are important for Muslims as they help us stay connected with our Creator through prayers while also helping us become more compassionate towards others through charity work.
