Riyad as-Salihin 1159 (Book 8, Hadith 169) #37648
Supplication and Gratitude to Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) supplicated to Allah for his Ummah and was granted one-third of them each time. He then prostrated in gratitude to Allah.

Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We left Makkah with the Messenger of Allah for Al-Madinah, and when we were near 'Azwara,' he alighted (from his riding-camel) raised his hands in supplication to Allah for a while and prostrated himself. He remained for a long time in prostration. Then he stood up and raised his hands for a while, after which he prostrated himself (again), and remained for a long time in prostration. Then he stood up and raised his hands for a while, after which he prostrated himself for the third time. Then he said, "I supplicated my Rabb and made intercession for my Ummah, and He granted me one-third of them. So I again prostrated myself in gratitude to my Rabb. Then I raised my head and supplicated my Rabb for my Ummah, and He granted me another third of them. Again I raised my head and supplicated my Rabb for my Ummah and He granted me the last third of them. So I fell into prostration out of gratitude before my Rabb". Abu Dawud.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's supplication and gratitude to Allah for his Ummah. When the Prophet Muhammad was travelling from Makkah to Al-Madinah near 'Azwara', he alighted from his riding camel and raised his hands in supplication for a while before prostrating himself. He repeated this process three times, each time asking for one-third of his ummah before prostrating in gratitude when it was granted. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn towards our Lord in prayer and thank Him when our prayers are answered. It also shows us how important it is to have faith that our prayers will be answered by God if we are sincere in our intentions. We should also remember that even though we may not get what we ask for immediately, God will answer us eventually if it is good for us or those around us.
