Sahih al-Bukhari 3926 (Book 63, Hadith 151) #3754
The Love of Medina

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) praying to Allah to make Medina as beloved as Mecca and for its people to be healthy and blessed.

Narrated 'Aisha: When Allah's Messenger came to Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal got fever, and I went to both of them and said, "O my father, how do you feel? O Bilal, how do you feel?" Whenever Abu Bakr's fever got worse, he would say, "Every man will meet his death once in one morning while he will be among his family, for death is really nearer to him than his leather shoe laces (to his feet)". And whenever fever deserted Bilal, he would say aloud, "Would that I know whether I shall spend a night in the valley (of Mecca) with Idhkhir and Jalil (ie kinds of grass) around me, and whether I shall drink one day the water of Mijannah, and whether I shall see once again the hills of Shamah and Tafil?" Then I went to Allah's Messenger and told him of that. He said, "O Allah, make us love Medina as much as or more than we used to love Mecca, O Allah, make it healthy and bless its Sa' and Mud (ie measures), and take away its fever to Al-Juhfa".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray faithfully & trust in God's plan

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Aisha, one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad. It tells us that when the Prophet arrived in Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal both got fever. Aisha went to check on them both, asking how they were feeling. Whenever Abu Bakr's fever got worse he would say that death was closer than his leather shoe laces, reminding himself that everyone will die one day. Whenever Bilal's fever left him he would express his longing for Mecca - wishing he could spend a night in the valley with Idhkhir and Jalil around him, drink from Mijannah's water, or see Shamah or Tafil hills again. When Aisha told this story to the Prophet Muhammad he prayed for Allah to make Medina as beloved as Mecca was before it; for its people to be healthy; for its Sa'and Mud measures; and take away its fever from Al-Juhfa. This hadith teaches us about faith in Allah’s plan - no matter what happens we should trust Him - but also reminds us of our love for our homeland which can never be replaced by any other place on earth no matter how much we love it too!
