Responding to Greetings with Prayers of Peace

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was greeted by the angel Jibril (Gabriel), and Aishah responded with a prayer of peace, mercy, and blessings.

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah said to me, "This is Jibril (Gabriel) who is conveying you greetings of peace". I responded: "Wa 'Alaihis-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu (May peace be upon him and the Mercy of Allah and His Blessings)". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
وعن عائشة رضي الله عنه قالت‏:‏ قال لي رسول الله ‏:‏ “هذا جبريل يقرأ عليك السلام‏"‏ قالت‏:‏ قلت‏:‏ ‏"‏وعليه السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏ وهكذا وقع في بعض روايات الصحيحين‏:‏ "وبركاته" وفي بعضها بحذفها وزيادة الثقة مقبولة

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was greeted by the angel Jibril. In response to this greeting, Aishah prayed for peace, mercy and blessings from Allah. This hadith teaches us that when we are greeted by someone we should respond in kind with a prayer for peace, mercy and blessings from Allah. It is important to remember that our words have power and can bring comfort or joy to those around us. We should use them wisely in order to spread positivity in our lives and those of others.
