Sahih al-Bukhari 3904 (Book 63, Hadith 129) #3732
Choosing Good Over Splendor

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) gave a slave the choice between worldly splendor and luxury or the good of the Hereafter, and he chose the latter. Abu Bakr was moved to tears by this, and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) praised him for his companionship and wealth.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: Allah's Messenger sat on the pulpit and said, "Allah has given one of His Slaves the choice of receiving the splendor and luxury of the worldly life whatever he likes or to accept the good (of the Hereafter) which is with Allah. So he has chosen that good which is with Allah". On that Abu Bakr wept and said, "Our fathers and mothers be sacrificed for you". We became astonished at this. The people said, "Look at this old man! Allah's Messenger talks about a Slave of Allah to whom He has given the option to choose either the splendor of this worldly life or the good which is with Him, while he says'.our fathers and mothers be sacrifice(i for you". But it was Allah's Messenger who had been given option, and Abu Bakr knew it better than we. Allah's Messenger added, "No doubt, I am indebted to Abu Bakr more than to anybody else regarding both his companionship and his wealth. And if I had to take a Khalil from my followers, I would certainly have taken Abu Bakr, but the fraternity of Islam is. sufficient. Let no door (ie Khoukha) of the Mosque remain open, except the door of Abu Bakr".

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose what is good over what may seem attractive in this world; Value friendship; Be loyal; Be generous; Be humble; Have faithfulness; Strive towards righteousness ; Follow examples set by righteous people like Abubakr .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a slave who was given a choice between worldly splendor and luxury or the good which is with Allah in the Hereafter. He chose to accept what was with Allah, which moved Abu Bakr to tears as he understood that it could have been Prophet Muhammad himself who had been given this option. Prophet Muhammad then praised Abu Bakr for his companionship and wealth, saying that if he were to take someone as his close friend it would be him but that they already shared a bond through Islam which was enough. He also said no door of the mosque should remain open except for Abu Bakr's door. This hadith teaches us that we should choose what is good over what may seem attractive in this world, as ultimately our reward lies in our faithfulness towards God in both word and deed. It also shows us how much Prophet Muhammad valued friendship, loyalty, generosity, humility and faithfulness - all qualities embodied by Abu Bakr - making him an example for us all to follow when striving towards righteousness in our lives.
