Riyad as-Salihin 790 (Book 3, Hadith 13) #37279
The Danger of Vanity

SUMMARY: It is wrong to be vain and show off, and Allah will not look at those who do so on the Day of Resurrection.

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "Whoever allows his lower garment to drag out of vanity will find that Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection". On this Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O Messenger of Allah! My lower garment keeps sliding down though I take care to pull it and wrap it". The Messenger of Allah said, "You are not of those who do it out of vanity". Al- Bukhari.

QUICK LESSONS:
Dress modestly without trying to draw attention to oneself

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against being vain or showing off. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that whoever allows their lower garment to drag out of vanity will find that Allah will not look at them on the Day of Resurrection. Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) asked if this applied even if he took care to pull it up and wrap it around himself, and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) replied that he was not one who did it out of vanity. This hadith teaches us about humility and modesty; we should dress modestly without trying to draw attention to ourselves or show off our clothing in a way which could make others feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. We should also remember that our actions have consequences; if we are vain then we may find ourselves facing punishment from God on the Day of Judgement.
