The Dangers of Seeking Knowledge for Wrong Reasons

SUMMARY: Knowledge should not be sought to show off or argue with the foolish, and one should not take the best seat in a gathering.

It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah that: The Prophet said: "Do not seek knowledge in order to show off in front of the scholars, or to argue with the foolish, and do not choose the best seat in a gathering, due to it (ie the knowledge which you have learned) for whoever does that, the Fire, the Fire (awaits him)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge only for its own sake .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against seeking knowledge for wrong reasons such as showing off or arguing with foolish people. It also advises us to not take the best seat in a gathering, as this is an act of arrogance and pride which will lead to punishment from Allah. We should seek knowledge only for its own sake, and use it to benefit ourselves and others around us. We must remember that knowledge is a great blessing from Allah, so we must use it wisely and humbly without any intention of showing off or competing with others.
