Sunan Ibn Majah 27 (Book) #36929
Careful Narrating of Hadiths

SUMMARY: It is important to be careful when narrating hadiths and not to exaggerate or be negligent in doing so.

It was narrated from Ibn Tawus that his father said: "I heard Ibn 'Abbas saying: 'We used to memorize Ahadith, and Ahadith were memorized from the Messenger of Allah . But if you go to the extremes of either exaggeration or negligence , there is no way we can trust your Ahadith'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be accurate and careful when narrating Ahadith .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of being careful when narrating hadiths. It is important to neither exaggerate nor be negligent in relaying the information as it can lead to a lack of trustworthiness. The narrator, Ibn Tawus, heard this from his father who heard it from Ibn 'Abbas. This shows that even though we may have memorized ahadith from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, if we are not careful in our narration then there will be no trust in what we say. We must take care to ensure that our narration is accurate and trustworthy so that others can rely on it for guidance and knowledge.
