The Value of Listening to Hadith

SUMMARY: Ash-Sha'bi sat with Ibn 'Umar for a year and did not hear him narrate any hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Abu Safar said: "I heard Ash-Sha'bi saying: 'I sat with Ibn 'Umar for a year and I did not hear him narrate anything from the Messenger of Allah "
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي السَّفَرِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الشَّعْبِيَّ، يَقُولُ جَالَسْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ سَنَةً فَمَا سَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ـ شَيْئًا

It was narrated by Abdullah bin Abu Safar that he heard Ash-Sha'bi saying that he sat with Ibn 'Umar for a year and did not hear him narrate anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
