The Consequences of Truthfulness and Lying

SUMMARY: Truthfulness leads to right action and ultimately the Garden, while lying leads to corruption and ultimately the Fire.

Malik related to me that he heard that Abdullah ibn Masud used to say, "You must tell the truth. Truthfulness leads to right action. Right action leads to the Garden. Beware of lying. Lying leads to corruption, and corruption leads to the Fire. Don't you see that it is said, 'He speaks the truth and acts rightly,' and, 'He lies and is corrupt'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Tell the truth

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of truthfulness and lying. It teaches us that if we tell the truth, it will lead us to do good deeds which will take us to Jannah or Paradise. On the other hand, if we lie it will lead us to do bad deeds which will take us away from Jannah or Paradise. The hadith also mentions two phrases that are used in Arabic literature; “He speaks the truth and acts rightly” meaning someone who is truthful in their words as well as their actions, and “He lies and is corrupt” meaning someone who lies but also does bad deeds. This hadith encourages people to be truthful in all aspects of life so they can reach Jannah or Paradise by doing good deeds.
