The Permissibility of Making Promises and Telling the Truth

SUMMARY: It is not good to lie, but it is permissible to make a promise and tell the truth.

Malik related to me from Safwan ibn Sulaym that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "Can I lie to my wife, Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "There is no good in lying". The man said, "Messenger of Allah! Shall I make her a promise and tell her?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "It will not be held against you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest with your words and keep your promises as much as possible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of telling the truth and making promises. It was narrated by Malik ibn Anas from Safwan ibn Sulaym that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, if he could lie to his wife. The Prophet replied that there is no good in lying. The man then asked if he could make her a promise and tell her instead. To this, the Prophet said that it would not be held against him. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to be honest with our words and keep our promises as much as possible because lying does not bring any benefit or goodness into our lives or relationships with others. We should also remember that even when we make mistakes or break promises unintentionally, Allah will forgive us if we sincerely repent for our actions.
