Obligations of a Slave

SUMMARY: A slave is only obligated to do work that they are capable of doing and should be provided with food and clothing.

Malik related to me that he heard that Abu Hurayra said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A slave has his food and clothing in the normal manner, and he is only obliged to do such work as he is capable of doing".

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat your slaves fairly; Respect their rights; Provide them with basic necessities such as food and clothing; Do not burden them with tasks beyond their capability.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the obligations of a slave. It states that a slave should only be obligated to do work that they are capable of doing, and should be provided with food and clothing in the normal manner. This hadith teaches us to treat our slaves fairly, as Allah has commanded us to do so in the Quran. We must not burden them with tasks beyond their capability or deny them basic necessities such as food or clothing. We must also remember that slaves have rights just like any other human being, and we must respect those rights even if they are not free people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us this lesson through his words in this hadith, reminding us all to treat our slaves kindly and fairly according to Islamic teachings.
