Keeping Pet Dogs and its Impact on Good Deeds

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned against keeping a pet dog that is not used for hunting or herding sheep, as it will reduce the reward of one's good deeds.

Malik related to me from Yazid ibn Khusayfa that as-Sa'ib ibn Yazid informed him that he heard Sufyan ibn Abi Zuhayr who was from the Azd Shanua tribe and among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, speaking with some people who were with him at the door of the mosque. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'If anyone acquires a dog which he does not use as a sheepdog or for hunting, a qirat will be deducted from the reward of his good deeds each day'. " He was asked, "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?" He said, "Yes, by the Lord of this mosque".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith was narrated by Malik ibn Anas from Yazid ibn Khusayfa who heard it from As-Sa'ib ibn Yazid who heard it from Sufyan Ibn Abi Zuhayr who was among the companions of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. In this hadith, the Prophet warned against keeping a pet dog that is not used for hunting or herding sheep as it will reduce one's reward for their good deeds each day. This teaches us to be mindful of our actions and how they can affect our rewards in life hereafter. We should strive to do only those things which are beneficial to us in this world and in the hereafter. We should also remember that Allah rewards us for our good deeds so we should always strive to do what is right even if no one else knows about it because Allah knows all things and He will reward us accordingly.
