Excessive Greetings Disapproved

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar disliked someone who excessively greeted him with blessings.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that a man greeted Abdullah ibn Umar. He said, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and his barakat, on and on". Abdullah ibn Umar said to him, "And on you, a thousand times," as if he disliked that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Return greetings in kind and show respect for others when speaking to them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the etiquette of greeting people. It is narrated by Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that a man greeted Abdullah ibn Umar with a long salutation, wishing peace and mercy of Allah and his blessings on him. However, instead of returning the greeting in kind, Abdullah Ibn Umar replied with “And on you, a thousand times” as if he disliked it. This hadith teaches us that we should not be excessive in our greetings or blessings when talking to people as it may be seen as disrespectful or annoying. We should also remember that we should always return greetings in kind and show respect for others when speaking to them.
