The Reward of Kindness Towards Animals

SUMMARY: A man was walking on a road when he found a thirsty dog. He showed mercy to the dog by going down into the well and filling his shoe with water for it to drink. Allah thanked him for his kindness and forgave him.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Sumayyah, the mawla of Abu Bakr from Abu Salih as-Samman from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A man was walking on a road when he became very thirsty. He found a well and went into it and drank and came out. There was a dog panting and eating earth out of thirst. The man said, 'This dog has become as thirsty as I was'. He went down into the well and filled his shoe and then held it in his mouth until he climbed out and gave the dog water to drink. Allah thanked him for it and forgave him". They said, "Messenger of Allah, do we have a reward for taking care of beasts?" He said, "There is a reward for every one with a moist liver".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards animals

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the reward of showing kindness towards animals. It tells us that if we show mercy and kindness towards animals then Allah will thank us for it and forgive us our sins. The hadith is narrated by Yahya from Malik from Sumayyah who was the mawla of Abu Bakr from Abu Salih as-Samman from Abu Hurayra who reported that Prophet Muhammad said “A man was walking on a road when he became very thirsty. He found a well and went into it and drank and came out. There was a dog panting and eating earth out of thirst. The man said, 'This dog has become as thirsty as I was.' He went down into the well and filled his shoe with water until he climbed out again giving the dog water to drink." When asked if there would be any reward for taking care of beasts Prophet Muhammad replied "There is a reward for every one with a moist liver". This hadith teaches us that we should always be kind to animals no matter how small or insignificant they may seem because Allah will thank us for our good deeds even if they are done in secret or without anyone knowing about them. We should also remember that all creatures have feelings just like humans do so we should treat them with respect at all times in order to receive Allah's blessings in return.
